Samuel Gaskins- 1st Ward

Now serving his first term on the Sanford City Council, Sam Gaskins is a chemistry professor at Guilford Technical Community College in Jamestown, a position he has held since 1999. Before moving to academia, he retired after more than two decades as a manufacturing manager for Pfizer/Coty.
Gaskins is well-known locally through service on a number of boards. He twice served as president of Sanford Kiwanis and led the Temple Theatre board of directors from 1996 to 1998. Other board memberships have included the Coalition for Families, United Way of Lee County, Helping Hand Clinic and Brush and Palette Club.

A graduate of Indiana University with a master's degree from DePauw University, Gaskins has been listed in "Who's Who in Indiana," "Who's Who in the South and Southwest" and "Who's Who Worldwide." He is married to Lynda F. Turbeville and is active in St. Thomas Episcopal Church.

 

Charles Taylor- 2nd Ward

An employee of 3M in Sanford, Charles Taylor was elected to his first term on the Sanford City Council in November 2007.

 

 

James Williams - 3rd Ward & Mayor Pro Tem

A Lee County native, J.D. Williams was first elected to the Sanford City Council in 1995 and continues his work to enhance the local community and pass legislation in the North Carolina General Assembly forbidding the state from withholding funding designated for cities.

Williams attended Central Carolina Community College and Fayetteville Technical Community College, receiving an associates degree in business and insurance. He is lead singer and manager for the Gospel Echoes traveling gospel group and a member of New Zion Baptist Church.

He and his wife, Gloria Clegg Williams, live in the Jonesboro Township. They have two daughters, Angela Murchison and Dawn R. Williams, and four grandchildren.

Rebecca Wyhof

Rebecca Wyhof - 5th Ward

Elected to her first term in November 2011, Rebecca Wyhof is vice president of the North Carolina Telecommunications Industry Association, a trade organization representing carriers providing services throughout the state.

Before accepting her current position, Wyhof worked as communications director for the Pew Center for Civic Journalism, a national nonprofit based in Washington; the North Carolina Civic Education Consortium; the City of Fayetteville (N.C.) and the Office of Environmental Security at the Pentagon.

Wyhof received her B.A. in political science and public communication from The American University in Washington and Master of Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Chas Post

Norman "Chas" Post - At Large

A practicing attorney with a passion for his community, Chas Post is a product of Sanford. He was born and raised here, and graduated from Lee County High School. After graduating from law school and working for a law firm in Charlotte, he was able to realize a dream and come home to Sanford to practice with the family law firm.

He graduated from Lee County High School in 2002, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington in 2006, and the Charlotte School of Law in 2009. In law school, he founded the Charlotte School of Law chapter of the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy. Chas is the vice president of the Lee County Bar Association and a member of the Legal Aid of North Carolina Local Advisory Board.

Chas married his wife, Kim, in 2011. They attend St. Luke United Methodist Church in Sanford.

 

 

Jimmy Haire - At Large

Jimmy Haire arrived on the City Council with a lifetime of experience in the community. Born and raised in Sanford, Haire is respected as a local historian, professional photographer and owner of Jimmy Haire Photography Studio, a successful local business for more than three decades.

He was named 2007 Lee County Small Business Owner of the Year and received the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award from The Sanford Herald, where he began in 1959 as a 10-year-old paperboy and later served as writer, ad salesman, photographer and circulation director.

Haire lives in Sanford with his wife, Tonya. The couple has three grown children, Justin, David and Allison.

City Council meets the first and third Tuesday of each month in City Hall's Council Chambers at 7:00pm.


Law & Finance meetings are held the Wednesday prior to the Council Meetings in City Hall's Council Chambers at 5:00pm.


All Council meetings are aired on Channel 191, the city's government access channel, on Charter Communications for one week following the meeting at 3pm, 6pm, & 10pm.
