Sanford Named Top Small City to Start a Business

Sanford was named 2018’s 15th Best Small City to Start a Business in a recent study of more than 1,200 small-sized U.S. cities.

Conducted by personal finance outlet, the study compared cities with a population between 25,000 and 100,000 residents. The cities were ranked based on three main metrics: the business environment, access to resources, and business costs.

Sanford’s high ranking was partially because of its business costs score. The category takes into consideration office space affordability, labor costs, corporate taxes, and the cost of living. Sanford’s access to resources – which includes workforce development and job growth – also helped it rank well.

WalletHub used data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, AreaVibes, Yelp, Indeed, Tax Foundation, and LoopNet to rank the cities.

Wilson and Salisbury were the only other North Carolina cities in the top 20.
