PD drawn

The Sanford Police Department has won a grant from the NC Department of Transportation’s Division of Bicycle and Pedestrian Transportation that will provide 50 bike helmets for local youth.

The helmets, which will range in size and colors, are part of the division’s Bicycle Helmet Initiative to reduce bicycle injuries and deaths in North Carolina. In addition to the helmets, the Community Policing Unit will receive 50 pairs of front and rear bicycle lights.

The helmet grant is funded through the sale of “Share the Road” specialty license plates and must be given to families in need through bike safety events held in the 2019 calendar year. The police department's Community Policing Unit will distribute the helmets and lights through the National Night Out program.
