The position of Civil Engineer offers exciting opportunities to the selected candidate.  The ideal candidate will design and supervise the design of a variety of public works/utility projects to enhance our city's systems and operations by preparing plans, specifications and bid documents; and monitor projects through completion by ensuring compliance with project specifications and schedules.  Additionally, work with developers and their engineers through the development process to ensure utility and street design and construction meet city specifications.

Candidate should have significant engineering experience and a four year degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering.  Preference will be given to a registered Professional Engineer.  Must have the ability to establish and maintain working relationships with associates, municipal officials, state officials, and the general public.

Utility Maintenance Worker I Water Construction & Maintenance Division - Duties include, but are not limited to: Installs, constructs, repairs, and maintains water lines to include: making water taps and service connections; cleaning and mowing rights of way; clearing rights-of-way; and cleaning manholes. Requires HS diploma, or equivalent, and NC driver’s license. 

Minimum rate of pay:  $ 22,814 per year

Public Works Department - The successful incumbent will perform difficult skilled work supervising and participating in the work of a small crew of maintenance workers and equipment operators. Incumbent will inspect work in progress; train and evaluate performance of employees; ensure appropriate materials and equipment are available; ensure compliance with standards and policies; maintain records and files; prepare reports; etc.  Qualified candidate must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with associates and the general public. Position requires: possession of a valid NC commercial driver’s license; any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school; considerable experience in maintenance, construction, or other related technical field; and 2 – 3 years supervisory experience preferred. 

Starting salary: $30,680 per year earned and paid on a bi-weekly basis.

Assistant Utilities Superintendent When applying please list the position title and posting number (PW-WC&M-12-08) on the application 

Major responsibilities include assisting with the planning and supervising of the installation, maintenance and repair of water and sewer lines; assisting with maintaining records and files; preparing reports; and coordinating response to emergency situations. Incumbent reports to the Superintendent of Utilities and meets regularly to discuss the status of current and future divisional activities and operations.  Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.  Position requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in business administration or related field and considerable experience in construction and maintenance activities. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: possession of a valid NC commercial driver’s license is required; possession of Grade IV Collection, Cross Connection, and Grade A Distribution certificates is preferred. Must have the ability to obtain and work toward herbicide applicator license. 

Starting salary: $39,277 per year
