| When
files are saved, copied, or written to a new hard disk, the operating
system saves the files in sequential areas on the disk called sectors.
Files stored in sequential sectors can be quickly retrieved. When a file
can't be stored in sequential sectors, the file becomes "fragmented",
and the operating system takes longer to retrieve the file. |
