Do I need to get any approval before I change anything on my house? |
| Yes,
if you live in an historic district and are making exterior changes to
your property.
You do not need approval from the Historic Preservation Commission
for any interior changes to your house; however, you may want to contact
Building Inspections for exterior changes.

| 4. What are the tax credits available for rehabilitation projects in an historic neighborhood? |
| If
your property is listed as a contributing property in a National Register
Historic District, you may be eligible for tax credits for interior and
exterior rehabilitation projects.
The State of North Carolina Preservation Office must approve
your project before you begin work in order to receive tax credits.

income-producing properties, there is a 20% state tax credit and a 20%
federal tax credit available.
Your expenses must exceed the greater of the adjusted basis of
the building or $5,000 within two years.
For non-income producing properties, there is a 30% state tax credit
available.
