Buzzline Ribbon Cutting Marks Start of Innovative Microtransit Service

Municipal News & Announcements Posted on October 24, 2025

The City of Sanford and Lee County Government invite the community to a ribbon cutting for Buzzline, the first on-demand microtransit service for riders in Sanford and Lee County.

The ceremony will be held on Monday, November 3, 2025, at 10 a.m. at the Sanford Municipal Center, located at 225 E. Weatherspoon Street in Sanford. The event will include remarks from local leaders, test rides within the service area, and an opportunity to view the new Buzzline vehicles.

Buzzline Microtransit Van

Buzzline is the first City-County microtransit partnership of its kind in North Carolina, offering affordable, app-based rides within a designated service zone that connects riders to work, school, medical appointments, and more. The name Buzzline reflects Sanford’s identity as a Bee City USA community and symbolizes movement, connection, and community spirit.

This new service was developed from a Microtransit Feasibility Study conducted in 2022 by the N.C. Department of Transportation’s (NCDOT) Integrated Mobility Division and the Sanford/Lee County Planning Department, which found that Sanford would benefit from a subsidized on-demand transit program.

Buzzline is funded through NCDOT’s Mobility for Everyone, Everywhere in NC Grant, which seeks to expand high quality, on-demand transit services in rural low-income communities through micro mobility services. The grant provides $3.4 million to help offset the costs of launching and operating the pilot program through December 2027.

The service will be operated by the County of Lee Transportation System (COLTS) on behalf of the City of Sanford.

Service Schedule

Buzzline services will begin with a soft launch on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, operating weekdays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Full service will begin on Monday, December 1, 2025, with expanded hours of operation as follows:

  • Monday to Friday: 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Saturday and Sunday: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The fare is $5 per ride, or $10 for a round trip. The fare is per ride, not per person. Groups of up to five passengers can ride together without an increase in cost.

Starting November 12, trips can be booked using the Buzzline app, online at www.buzzlinemicro.com, or by phone at 919-776-7201.

Based on rider demand, the City and County could expand the designated service area. For current service options outside the zone, contact COLTS at 919-776-7201.
