Sanford Fire Captain Recognized as Hometown HeroCapt. Alex Collazo
of the Sanford Fire Department was honored on Tuesday, Nov. 16 for being a Hometown Hero by the NC Automobile Dealers Association
Collazo was nominated by John Hiester Automotive. The award ceremony was held at the dealer's Fuquay-Varina location and the recognition was presented by Sanford Fire Chief Wayne Barber.
Chief Barber's remarks included a recap of Collazo's efforts to assist Sanford's sister city Atizapán de Zaragoza, Mexico with desperately needed firefighting supplies. Collazo is also working on training opportunities for firefighters in Atizapán, where there is only 1 firefighter for every 10,000 people.
Collazo also led an effort that included local volunteer fire departments, Red Hat, and the Sister Cities Association of Sanford to send 21 air packs and face masks to the Atizapán fire department.
In addition to the formal reading of the nomination, Chief Barber also noted that Capt. Collazo's ability to communicate fluently in Spanish is a huge asset to the Sanford community. "With our diverse population, Spanish-language communication is invaluable in serving all of our constituents," Barber said.
