The Sanford Appearance Commission is hosting a special ceremony on Thursday, August 21, to reveal its first four bee sculptures.
The sculptures represent the Commission’s commitment to pollinators and celebrate Sanford’s status as a Bee City USA. Two of the sculptures to be unveiled on Thursday were sponsored by private donations, one was sponsored by the City of Sanford, and one was sponsored by Downtown Sanford, Inc.
Following a ‘request for proposal’ process that started in early March, four artists were selected to decorate the sculptures. QuFu and Destini Richlin were chosen for the privately funded bees, Chris Dalton was selected for the City of Sanford bee, and Jacalyn McAlister was selected for the Downtown Sanford bee.
Once unveiled, the bees will undergo a weather-proofing process to ensure they are able to withstand the elements. They will then be installed at the Sanford Municipal Center, in downtown Sanford, and at other key locations inside the City limits.
The unveiling ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. in the front lobby of the Sanford Municipal Center, located at 225 E. Weatherspoon Street.
