Municipal Center Expansion Underway; Third Street Closed

Municipal News & Announcements Posted on November 20, 2025

Construction on the Sanford Municipal Center expansion is scheduled to begin next week, kicking off an anticipated 17-month timeline that will result in an additional municipal building and several community amenities.

Third Street has been closed to traffic between Weatherspoon Street and the dead end. Only construction equipment and vehicles will have access to this area. The sidewalk around the municipal center will also be closed in this area. The closure will last throughout the construction process.

Sanford Municipal Center Complex Expansion 2The expansion will allow the City to consolidate customer service functions and will increase the amount of accessible public parking. Once finished, the complex will include a linear park, a splash pad, and a greenway that will connect to the future Sanford Central Green.

Residents in the area could experience loud noise intermittently throughout the construction phase, but crews will work to minimize disruption to residents in the area.

The expansion will address the City’s space needs while also creating “a shared space that brings people together – whether that’s to conduct business or strengthen community bonds,” says Mayor Rebecca Salmon. Integrating the public amenities and connecting the campus to downtown is a crucial component of Council’s goals for the Sanford Central Green.
