The City of Sanford’s Downtown Small Area Plan final draft is now available for public viewing.
The plan will serve as a comprehensive guide for development in Downtown Sanford over the next 15 to 20 years. The goal for the plan is to “foster economic growth and encourage high-quality land development,” says David Montgomery, the City’s long-range planner.
Over the past year, Planning staff worked with consulting firm Benchmark Planning to hold workshops and conduct stakeholder interviews. The meetings were opportunities for residents, business and property owners, and the broader Sanford community to participate in shaping a vision for the future of the downtown area.
The final draft of the plan includes recommendations for future public-private investments, urban design, communal space, branding and promotional marketing, transportation and mobility, and development regulations.
The public is encouraged to review the plan and submit any feedback by March 13, 2026. The plan is located at www.plan4downtown.com/sanford and on our projects hub.
