Bee City USA
In April 2023, the City of Sanford was named an official Bee City USA, a designation given to cities, towns, and counties that have committed to the conservation of native pollinators.
The Bee City USA program is an initiative of the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. The program’s mission is to sustain native pollinators – like honey bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds – by providing them with a healthy habitat.
The program endorses a set of commitments for creating sustainable habitats for pollinators by increasing the abundance of native plants, providing nest sites, and reducing the use of pesticides. City staff and community members work together to carry out these commitments and make their city a better place for all pollinators.

Sanford Bee City Activities
The City of Sanford has demonstrated its commitment to local pollinators by establishing three hives at the Sanford Municipal Center, which are maintained by the City parks department with the guidance of award-winning Master Beekeeper Jody Moore. The Appearance Commission held a Bee City USA recognition ceremony at the City's hives on October 19, 2023. Attendees were able to see the hives, meet master beekeeper Jody Moore, and get seed packets to plant their own pollinator gardens. See photos from the event here.
Bee City Field Day
- When: Annually on the first Saturday of May from 9am to 12pm
- Where: dead-end of Third Street at the Sanford Municipal Center (225 E. Weatherspoon Street) in Sanford NC
- What: The Appearance Commission will host a morning of pollinator-themed activities and education. Anyone interested in participating should contact Liz Whitmore at 919-718-4657 x5393.
