The City of Sanford does not have any specific standards for the construction of fences on residential property, nor does the City of Sanford require a permit to be obtained prior to constructing a fence. There are, however, some general recommended guidelines for residents who wish to construct a fence on their property.
Location & Placement
○ Verify the location of your property lines either by locating the corner markers or contacting a licensed land surveyor to do so
for you.
○ Verify the location of all easements (either utility, drainage, or access easements) on your property before constructing your
fence. You can check the recorded plat for your property by using the
Lee County Interactive GIS Map to search for your
property or contacting Community Development staff at 919-718-4656.
○ Avoid constructing your fence within any public rights-of-way around your property, including public streets or greenways.
○ Be mindful when constructing a fence along a street corner or near your driveway to maintain sufficient clearance to not
obstruct views of oncoming traffic.
Underground Utilities
○ Before you begin construction of your fence, be sure to contact
NC 811 to verify the location of underground utilities like gas lines, internet
cables, etc. NC 811 will respond to your home and assist in locating underground utilities on your property.
