Information for Residents

Do you need a building permit?

Before you start a home renovation or DIY project, you should find out whether a building permit is required.  This is especially important if the work you plan to do requires structural modifications (addition or removal of load-bearing walls), plumbing, electrical, or mechanical (HVAC) improvements.  New additions or the finishing of a basement or bonus room, new decks, the addition of a carport, and other projects will also likely require a building permit.

The first step to obtaining a building permit is Zoning & Design Review to ensure that all local land use standards are being met.  Please complete the application that best matches your intended project and submit it to the Department of Community Development for review.  Most applications can be submitted online using the CSS Self-Service Portal.

If you have any questions, please contact Community Development staff at 919-718-4656 or zoning@sanfordnc.net
