[ARCHIVED] Prepare Now for Impending Winter Storm Izzy

alert

Winter Storm Izzy is expected to bring snow and freezing rain to much of North Carolina on Sunday. For Sanford, the forecast is calling for snow that transitions to freezing rain. This potentially significant event could lead to power outages for a large percentage of our residents.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation deployed trucks across the state yesterday and today to brine major highways and through-fares, including Horner Boulevard. In the Sandhills region, crews have prepped their trucks with chainsaws and other tools to help with downed trees.

The City of Sanford is also preparing for this potentially major ice event. Snow plows are ready with new blades, and blades have been added to dump trucks to help with additional needs. City backhoes have been prepped to help with removing downed trees.

Important: The City of Sanford only plows City owned/maintained streets that have greater than one inch of snow. For less than one inch of snow or for ice, the City will treat its streets, overpasses, and bridges with a mixture of salt and sand.

Lee County urges residents to enroll in CodeRED, an electronic emergency notification system that enables local public safety personnel to notify residents and businesses of emergencies that may require action. Alerts come via telephone, text message, and email. There is no cost to register to receive CodeRED alerts. Register here: http://www.onsolve.com

Duke Energy and Central Electric have reached out to customers with information about reporting outages and tracking restoration, as well as to provide tips about preparing for winter weather.

For emergency information from the City during and after the storm, sign up for emergency alerts at www.sanfordnc.net and follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/sanfordnc. Also follow Lee County on social media at www.facebook.com/leecountync for updates as they are available.

Please note that the City of Sanford’s administrative offices are closed on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Beginning Tuesday, the City will provide recorded updates specific to its delays, closures, water and sewer emergencies, and any other emergencies specific to Sanford though the Customer Service Department at 919-775-8215. Updates will be provided as needed.

The City will also provide updates through our website, TV channel, and social media. We will send updates to traditional media outlets such as local and regional newspapers, TV stations, and radio stations.
