CSX Transportation has notified the City of Sanford that it will temporarily close several railroad crossings in Chatham and Lee counties for maintenance starting Wednesday.
The following crossings within Sanford’s city limits are affected and all are expected to close on or around March 20, 2024:
- E. Chisolm Street at Wilson Street
- Charlotte Avenue at Chatham Street
- Wicker Street at Chatham Street
- Fields Drive between Washington Avenue and Martin Street
- Garden Street between Washington Avenue and Clark Circle
Once closed, no traffic will be allowed across the tracks until the work is complete. CSX anticipates the closures to last at least 3 days with the potential for 5 days, based on need.
Detour signs will be posted.

Motorists should expect extended travel times and delays; therefore, it is advised to avoid the closure areas whenever possible.
