[ARCHIVED] City Offices Closed Jan 22 for Inclement Weather

City Offices closed Jan 22 for snow

With snow and ice accumulations and low temperatures creating hazardous driving conditions, the City of Sanford’s administrative offices are closed today.

GFL Environmental will operate on a 1-day delay, with Wednesday’s routes being collected on Thursday and so on. Residents should leave their carts at the curb. Leaf, limb, and bulk trash collection will resume a regular schedule as conditions allow.

The Sanford Police Department and Sanford Fire Department will operate as usual. In case of life-threatening emergencies, dial 9-1-1. For other concerns, such as downed trees in public roadways, call 919-775-8268.

Public Works crews worked through the night to address road conditions. “We applied several tons of salt and sand on trouble spots like bridges, overpasses, and inclines,” reports Phil Lawrence, Transportation Administrator for the City of Sanford.

The City starts plowing once one inch of snow has accumulated. For this weather event, they worked through the night plowing main thoroughfares such as portions of Horner Blvd, Lee Avenue, and Third Street, as well as the roads around the Sanford Police Department and Sanford’s fire departments.

However, congested roadways made plowing more challenging. “Traffic packed the snow in many areas, so we went from pushing the snow to trying to scrape packed snow,” Lawrence shares. “Our crews will plow side streets and neighborhood streets as they are able.”

Drivers are asked to use caution as roadways remain slick and temperatures will not rise above freezing today. “Please allow room for crews to work so we can ensure the safety of everyone,” Lawrence says.
