This Saturday, a dozen neighborhoods in Sanford’s city limits will host backyard parties, safety meetings, and potlucks as part of this year’s National Night Out program.
The City is officially hosting National Night Out (NNO) on the first Tuesday of October, which is October 1. However, this year – for the first time – elected officials, first responders, and municipal staff will visit local neighborhoods on September 28.
Coordinated by the National Association of Town Watch, this is 41st anniversary of the National Night Out program and the 31st anniversary of the City of Sanford’s participation. The goal for the program is to build relationships between neighbors and the first responders who serve them.
“These neighborhood visits give everyone the chance to get to know each other before a crisis – and that can make a huge difference in how the crisis is resolved,” notes Kelly Miller, public information officer and NNO coordinator for the City of Sanford.
In Sanford, elected officials participate in the neighborhood visits along with Sanford police officers and fire fighters. The Sanford Fire Department will provide free smoke detectors to neighbors without one.
On Tuesday, October 1, the community is invited to the Sanford Municipal Center on Weatherspoon Street for an NNO party that includes a first responder touch-a-truck, a live DJ, demonstrations, and yard games. There will be giveaways and free food from Lazy J’s Concessions and Tacos El Primo while supplies last.
