[ARCHIVED] Winter Weather Closes City Offices, Cancels Council Meeting

Due to anticipated wintry conditions, the City of Sanford’s administrative offices will close at 4:00 p.m. today and open at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. The Sanford City Council meeting scheduled for 5:00 p.m. today has been canceled.

A winter storm moving through the area could bring light wintry precipitation throughout the late afternoon and evening, resulting in slick roads and bridges this evening.

To prepare for the winter weather, the City of Sanford has taken several proactive measures. Sanford Parks crews treated roads around the Sanford Police Department and all four of Sanford’s fire stations yesterday. Today, the Kiwanis Family Park parking lot and main sidewalks were treated.

Our Public Works crews have been pretreating high-risk areas, including City-maintained overpasses, bridges, and shaded streets, with a salt-sand mixture. Plows will be deployed if snow accumulation exceeds one inch. Note that the City cannot plow ice.

“We will be prepared and wait to see what Mother Nature gives us,” said Fedd Walker, Public Works Director. “This time, the sustained freezing temperatures are the real concern. Anything that falls will likely stick around longer.”

Even small amounts of snow can quickly make roads dangerous in some spots. “The best would be for residents to stay home if they can,” added Walker.

With several days of sustained low temperatures in the forecast this week, the City of Sanford Fire Department encourages residents to use portable heaters safely to avoid creating a fire hazard. Helpful safety tips are available on the department’s Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Additionally, the Sanford Municipal Golf Course has covered the greens to protect them from freezing temperatures. The greens will remain covered until at least midday Friday.
