[ARCHIVED] City Residents Donate to Sanford Cares Utility Assistance Program

Sanford Cares

sanford cares donationMembers of the Sanford community have come together to make a monetary contribution to the Sanford Community Assistance & Relief Emergency Support (Cares) program.

Sanford Cares provides temporary assistance to help Lee County residents pay their water and sewer bills. The program is administered by Johnston-Lee-Harnett Community Action, a private, non-profit agency that helps families with housing, crisis intervention, utility bill assistance, and other services.

The donors – Pamela Adkins, Sophia Blount, Sadé Byrd, Maria McLean, LaCrecia Reives, Hope White, and Elonda Womble – are involved in many organizations and programs, including Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Sanford 101, and the Let’s Do It Together Foundation. “We love our city and we know that everything is better when we work together,” said White when making the donation.

Sanford Cares donationMayor Rebecca Wyhof Salmon was present for the donation. “Sanford is known for having a generous community that takes care of each other, as evidenced by today’s contribution,” she said. “I am grateful to represent each of these women and thank them for the many ways they are making Sanford a wonderful place to live – including today’s contribution.”

Utility customers can participate in the Sanford Cares program by rounding up their monthly bills to the nearest dollar, making a flat monthly donation, or making a one-time contribution.

Customers who have fallen behind on their water or sewer bills can apply for Sanford Cares assistance by contacting Johnston-Lee-Harnett Community Action. The agency will evaluate the need as an independent third party.
