Founded in 1988, North Carolina's Adopt-a-Highway program is managed by the Department of Transportation. The goal of the program is to keep sections of state roads free from litter.
The City of Sanford Appearance Commission has taken on Fire Tower Road as its project. The Commission enlists the help of volunteers for this bi-annual litter sweep.
In the past, volunteers have included members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Carolina, City staff, and youth groups.
