Code Enforcement

Duties & Responsibilities

The division enforces a number of ordinances for the City of Sanford. View the City of Sanford's code of ordinances here.

The main ordinances enforced by the City's Code Enforcement Division are:

  • Public nuisances, which are conditions deemed to be detrimental to the health, safety, or welfare of residents, such as overgrown grass; trash; health and fire hazards; and abandoned, junked, or nuisance vehicles.

  • Minimum housing standards, which require that occupied dwellings be maintained in a condition fit for human habitation and can require repair of deteriorated structures as well as demolition of dilapidated or abandoned structures.

Code Enforcement recently began enforcing the Commercial Maintenance Code, which contains provisions for maintenance, repair, or demolition of commercial structures.

The division also provides assistance and support to zoning, community development, and various other municipal departments.
